Concert Opens Canada 150 Amphitheatre

Posted 65 days ago

The Township of Langley is getting a unique gift in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday: the opportunity to enjoy live entertainment in the great outdoors.

An amphitheatre has been created in Willoughby Community Park, adjacent to the Langley Events Centre’s Building B, in the 7700 Block of 202A Street. The facility, which features tiered grass seating and a performance stage with a distinct maple leaf design, will be officially opened with a free concert on Thursday, May 25, at 7:00pm, and the public is encouraged to attend.

The event will feature an opening ceremony, remarks from local dignitaries, and performances by the Langley Community Music School Fiddlers, Langley Community Chorus, and the Langley Ukulele Senior A & B Ensemble.

“This new amphitheatre will be a great addition to Willoughby Community Park, which hosts Langley Township’s Canada Day celebrations and features a playground, spray park, playing fields, and sports facilities,” said Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese. “Many people from throughout the Township use and enjoy this park, and this new feature will give residents the added bonus of being able to experience live performances.”

The amphitheatre is a Canada 150 project, made possible by a grant from Western Economic Diversification Canada. It cost $260,000 to construct, half of which was provided through a Canada 150 Infrastructure Grant of $130,000 from the Government of Canada.

The Township is working with community volunteer Peter Luongo, past organizer of the Langley Has Talent competition series, to plan a free Canada 150 Summer Concert Series to celebrate the nation’s important milestone and showcase local talent at the newly constructed amphitheatre. Performances will be held at 7:00pm each Thursday throughout July and August.

A call for artists is being made, and individuals and groups who would like to perform during the Summer Concert Series are encouraged to fill out an application form, available at
