History

Williams Park, dressed up every Christmas, was a gift to the people of Langley from Dr. Don Williams and his family.  Dr. Williams, once the Dean of Medicine at UBC, bought the 44 acre park at 238 Street and 68 Avenue as a retirement property.

The couple rejected a lucrative offer from an American real estate developer and proceeded to plant dozens of varieties of trees, shrubs, and flowers including 20 different varieties of rhododendrons from the Royal Horticultural Gardens in England.

It is fitting that the Salmon River, one of the most important fish-bearing streams in BC, runs through the park as Dr. Williams wanted to keep much of the park in its natural state.  In 1964, he approached the Township to gauge interest in buying it.

Three years later, when Williams Park was officially opened, it was dedicated to the memory of the pioneers who helped build the country, to historic Langley, and to the future residents of the area.

The unique setting with its oval roadway and picnic shelter became an ideal location for a Christmas lights display starting in 1990.
