In British Columbia, the Local Government Act sets out the role and function of local municipalities. Municipal government in BC consists of an elected mayor and council which serve three year terms.

Elections are held throughout the province every third year on the third Saturday in November. The next election is scheduled for the third Saturday in November, 2011.
Administrative bodies separate from the Township look after education and health. Langley School District (#35) has its own elected Board of School Trustees and staff organization.
While Mayor and Council are responsible for policy making, municipal staff are responsible for translating policy into action and delivering various municipal services such as public works, engineering, community development, recreation, culture, and parks, and protective services.
