Are You Qualified to Vote?

The Local Government Act provides for two categories of electors for local government elections in BC: Resident Electors and Non-Resident Property Electors.

The Act also sets out the criteria for both categories of electors.

Register to Vote

You must register to vote.  The Township of Langley uses the Provincial Voters List to determine who is eligible to vote in the Township.  If you voted in the last provincial election, your name will appear on the Provincial Voters List, and will automatically be placed on the Township of Langley Voters List .

If your name is not on the Provincial Voters List, you may register on Elections BCs website.  Information on other registration opportunities is available on the website or by calling Elections BC toll-free at 1.800.661.8683.

Go To Your Voting Place to Vote:

You can vote any time between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on the day of the election at the voting place set up for your neighbourhood.  A map and list of voting place locations will be provided in your community newspaper, and a Where to Vote card mailed to all registered electors well before voting day.  If voting as a Non-Resident Property Elector, you must vote at the voting place for the area in which your property is located.

If you have moved since your registration on the Township of Langley Voters List , you must vote at the voting place for where you are living on voting day.

At the voting place your name and address will be checked against the List of Electors.  If not previously registered, you will be asked to do so.  Before receiving a ballot to vote, all persons must sign a declaration that they are eligible to vote and have not voted before in this election.

To qualify as a resident elector a person must meet all the following criteria:

  • 18 years of age or older on or before general voting day;
  • Canadian citizen;
  • Resident of BC for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration;
  • Resident of the jurisdiction for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration; and
  • Not disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other Act from voting in an election or be otherwise disqualified by law.
If You Need Help Voting

If you need help to vote, you may ask the Presiding Election Official (PEO) in charge at the voting place to assist you.  You may also bring someone with you to the voting place to help you vote.  This person must make a solemn declaration to preserve the secrecy of your ballot, to mark the ballot according to your wishes and to not attempt to influence how you vote.

If you are unable to enter the voting place, you may ask to receive and mark your ballot at a place located outside the voting place. It will be necessary for you to bring someone with you who can advise the election officials that you need help outside the voting place.
