Local Area Service

Through a Local Area Service, property owners who want to conduct neighbourhood improvements such as the installation of water or sewer systems, sidewalks, or street lighting can petition Council, asking for the Township to undertake the work.

The cost of providing the service is recovered through a local service tax placed on all the property owners in the area.

How much does it cost?

The following table provides approximate cost ranges to illustrate the magnitude of costs. Costs are based on 2016 prices. Owner’s share is typically calculated based on the length of taxable frontage.

Type of Local Area Service Owners Share Township Share Approximate Total Cost per Metre of Frontage ($/m)
Concrete curbs, gutters, and sidewalks 50% 50% $300 - $1,000
