Code of Conduct

The Township of Langley provides websites, social media and other platforms so the public has convenient online options to be informed of Township of Langley information and engage in online conversations. We encourage comments and questions with a goal of making our platforms a source of factual information, and a space for respectful discourse. Our small team of moderators do their best to answer questions, clarify confusion, and point people to resources. We encourage users to search on our website to find the information you seek.

People should feel respected and safe on our platforms. That’s why we have and enforce Terms of Use, Code of Conduct, and moderate comments. The following guides the conduct for posting comments on Township of Langley websites, social media and other platforms to promote a safe and effective forum for all community participants.

Because ours are platforms people turn to for facts, we hide or delete third-party links that point people to anything other than Township information, credible news, or research sources. Similarly, we remove comments that contain claims that cannot be easily verified by trustworthy sources. We welcome fair comments about policies but not disparaging remarks about individuals.

Please note that while we try to respond to questions, we are not able to reply to or moderate every inquiry. We encourage users to search on our website to find the information you seek. As such, people should not take publicly made comments posted on our site as true or supported by the Township of Langley.

The Township of Langley monitors its websites, social media and other platforms and will take any action it deems appropriate, including hiding or deleting posts, locking posts (disabling comments), providing a warning, blocking/suspending/banning user access, or informing law enforcement in alignment with the Terms of Use and Code of Conduct. If you see something that bothers you, tell us about it. We will do our best to investigate all complaints and will take action if appropriate.

We reserve the right to edit our posts for clarification or remove comments that abuse the following conditions:

a) Be Respectful: All users must be respectful of others, especially when disagreeing with others. Users must also be courteous to everyone, even those whose opinions you may disagree with. We encourage healthy debate, but please express your opinion about a person’s ideas, not about them personally. Comments that are racist, hateful, sexist, homophobic, slanderous, insulting, threatening, and/or contain abusive, obscene, indecent or offensive language (this includes emojis) will not be tolerated and will be removed immediately.

b) Be Honest: Use your real name. Comments and posts using pseudo names or anonymous names are not permitted. Be clear on your role or understanding of a topic – discussions should be transparent, open, and honest. Do not plagiarize content from others (comments where the sender is not the author).

c) Be Relevant: Comments should stay on the topic of the original post. Comments that take an extreme or inappropriate tangent from the conversation may be removed to encourage and facilitate effective discussions relevant to the original posted topic.

d) Be Accurate: Comments that make unproven, unsupported, or factually inaccurate claims (e.g., false statements conspiracy theories, or other misinformation or disinformation) may be clarified or removed.

e) Follow The Law: Users must follow the laws governing copyright and fair use or fair dealing of copyrighted material owned by others. Always get permission from rightful owners of content. Material that advocates illegal activity or discusses illegal activities with the intent to commit them, are prohibited. Do not post comments that are contrary to the principles of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, or encourage conduct that may or would constitute a criminal offence or give rise to civil liability, or that otherwise violates any local, provincial, national or international law or regulation anywhere in the world.

f) Do Not Make Personal Attacks: Users must abstain from defamatory and hateful speech against Township elected officials, employees, the Township overall, or other members of the public, including defamatory, abusive, harassing or hateful remarks, and must not make unproven or unsupported accusations against individuals or organizations.

Do not identify or comment about any publicly elected representative or candidate regardless of their political affiliation, whether those comments are supportive or critical (we discuss policies, not people).

Do not invade anyone’s privacy or include identifying or personal information about someone.

Personal remarks, about other users, including negative remarks about their age, disability, gender, gender expression, gender identity, ethnicity, race, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, intelligence, character, appearance, health, mental health, education, or any other personal characteristic are not appropriate and will not be tolerated and will be removed immediately.

Posts, comments and discussions intended to criticize, ridicule or attack other users personally are not allowed and will be removed immediately.

g) Do Not Post Offensive Content: Users must not post profane, obscene, vulgar, or otherwise offensive content. Users must not display words, information, or images that are profane, obscene, vulgar, graphically violent, graphically sexual, harm minors in any way, exploit images of children, or are otherwise objectionable. This includes URLs of sites that display such words, images, or information.

h) Do Not Post Spam or Advertisements: Spam, including advertisements, links to businesses/products, excessive links, links that contain code, personal political statements, and repetitive comments on multiple and often unrelated posts, will be removed.
