Code of conduct
The Township of Langley provides websites with social capabilities as in present on social media so that the public can have an opportunity to be part of an online conversation, to be informed of Township of Langley information and to have a positive experience. The following guides the conduct for posting comments on Township of Langley websites and social media platforms to promote a safe forum for all community participants.
a) Be respectful: Websites and social media platforms are provided as a forum for community information and conversation. All users must be respectful of others, especially when disagreeing with others. Users must also be courteous to everyone, even those whose opinions you may disagree with. We encourage healthy debate, but please express your opinion about a person’s ideas, not about them personally.
b) Be honest: Use your real name. Comments and posts using pseudo names or anonymous names are not permitted. Be clear on your role or understanding of a topic – discussions should be transparent, open, and honest.
c) Be relevant: Comments should stay on the topic of the original post. Comments that take an extreme or inappropriate tangent from the conversation may be removed to encourage and facilitate effective discussions relevant to the original posted topic.
d) Follow the law: Users must follow the laws governing copyright and fair use or fair dealing of copyrighted material owned by others. Always get permission from rightful owners of content, logos, photos, and video files. Material that advocates illegal activity or discusses illegal activities with the intent to commit them, are prohibited.
e) Do not make personal attacks: Users must abstain from defamatory and hateful speech. Personal remarks, about other users, including negative remarks about their age, disability, gender, gender expression, gender identity, ethnicity, race, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, intelligence, character, appearance, health, mental health, education, or any other personal characteristic are not appropriate and will not be tolerated. Posts, comments and discussions intended to criticize, ridicule or attack other users personally are not allowed and will be immediately removed. The same rules apply to comments regarding or directed at members of the Township of Langley’s Council, the Administration, or the Township of Langley, generally.
f) Do not post offensive content: Users must not post obscene, vulgar, or otherwise offensive content. Users must not display words, information, or images that are vulgar, obscene, graphically violent, graphically sexual, harm minors in any way, exploit images of children, or are otherwise objectionable. This includes URLs of sites that display such words, images, or information.
g) Do not post spam: Spam, including advertisements, personal or political statements, and repetitive comments on multiple and often unrelated posts, will be removed.
The Township of Langley may monitor its websites and social media platforms and may take any action it deems appropriate, including hiding or deleting posts, locking posts (disabling comments), providing a warning, blocking/suspending/banning user access, or informing law enforcement.
The Township of Langley may actively monitor our sites during regular business hours, but we may not look at every conversation or media posted. If you see something that bothers you, tell us about it. We will do our best to investigate all complaints and will take action if appropriate.
