Fire service accreditation

What is it?

Accreditation is a rigorous program for improving fire service decision-making, resource deployment, service performance, cost effectiveness and public reporting.

Why is it different?

Accreditation makes fire service operations better because it:

• spans all the services that the Fire Department provides and guides the balancing of resourcing and deployment among conflicting demands
• strives for continuous improvement in all processes, systems and deliverables
• gives the public clear information about Fire Department goals and actual performance

What are the benefits of accreditation?

Accreditation provides dramatic benefits to Council, Fire Department staff, and most importantly – to the public. Key benefits are presented below.

• Accreditation raises the level of performance and professionalism within the organization.
• The quality and level of information enable Council to improve decision-making about fire service resources and programs.

Fire service accreditation is unique because it:

• provides a clear, logical framework for Council to plan and fund Fire Department resources and infrastructure
• examines all emergency services not just fire suppression
• measures full performance (e.g. when is a full crew at the scene) compared to the arrival of just the first truck
