40 Avenue Culvert Replacement Update
Update October 4, 2025: 40 Avenue between 208 Street and 216 Street is now open.
The culvert replacement and all in-stream and road restoration works are now complete on this very complex project.
The Township understood the importance of 40 Avenue as an east-west corridor and worked with the contractor to open the road as early as possible. The contractor will continue working on final aspects such as landscaping and permanent lane markings which will result in some temporary traffic impacts over the next few weeks.
Your patience was appreciated during this project impacted by technical challenges including a major water main pipe, fish habitats, environmental considerations, and required governmental approvals.
September 2, 2025: 40 Avenue between 208 Street and 216 Street is scheduled to open on October 10, 2025, subject to weather and any unexpected delays.
Your patience is appreciated during this complex construction project impacted by technical challenges including a major water main pipe, fish habitats, environmental considerations, and required governmental approvals.
The project had to secure the required environmental approvals, including an Emergency Authorization from Fisheries and Oceans Canada and a Notice of Authorized Changes under the Water Sustainability Act from the Province.
While the road has been closed since the major atmospheric river storm in October 2024 due to the complexities and required approvals outlined above, actual construction has been done quickly over the past few months.
Culvert replacement and all in-stream works are complete and the contractor is working on road restoration. Staff continue to work closely with the contractor to mitigate impacts and expedite construction progress.
Local access for residents and pedestrians continues to be maintained on either side of the closure.
We appreciate everyone's patience during this complex project.
