The Township is home to over 700km of rivers, creeks, and streams and approximately 900km of agricultural and roadside watercourses. These waterways are part of an extensive network of watercourses home to resident fish populations and offers natural habitat for a multitude of birds and other wildlife.
Everyone can help play a part in keeping our waterways clean and riparian areas healthy.
Here is what you can do to help
- Keep dogs on a leash and away from spawning salmon and other wildlife.
- Remember to dispose of litter and dog waste bags in marked receptacles or dispose at home.
- Keep pollutants out of ditches, storm drains, and streams. All outdoor drains lead to fish habitat so never dispose of anything other than rainwater down a perimeter drain or catch basin (storm drain).
- Respect riparian vegetation and stick to designated trails when in park spaces and avoid clearing near watercourses on your property. Healthy riparian areas help protect fish habitat by providing shade, insects (food), filtering pollutants, and erosion control.
- Learn how to incorporate naturescaping principals in your home’s landscaping such as gardening with native plants to create backyard habitat for wildlife.
- If works in a stream or ditch are required to address flood concerns, learn about what is permitted and best management practices for conducting Instream Works.
- Report suspected pollution and unauthorized works in and around streams to the Province of BC.
