The Township of Langley marks Economic Development Week

The Township of Langley’s Economic Investment Development team works to help create an environment for wealth for the community in the form of community amenities and an environment that supports a vibrant workforce, a thriving economy, and a thoughtful approach to environmental, social, and cultural interests that all contribute to enhancing the prosperity and quality of life for Township residents and businesses – both current and prospective.

Economic Development Week (May 8 to 12, 2023) celebrates the achievements and impact of economic development in communities across BC. The Township of Langley takes this opportunity to reflect on the contributions of our local businesses and supporting organizations that promote economic growth and prosperity for the benefit of our community’s well-being.

The Township is one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Metro Vancouver, and it is easy to see why. With a unique mix of rural and urban lifestyles and landscapes, a strong local economy, diverse housing options, and abundant community services, the Township takes pride in honouring its past while creating a modern, thriving, sustainable region for those who call it home today – and for future generations to come.

Year over year, more people are choosing to live in the Township of Langley. We pride ourselves on developing vibrant, complete neighbourhoods that offer a flexible range of mixed housing options, and an opportunity to live, work, shop and play in a safe community.

Over the past four decades, the Township has experienced a dramatic increase in population, reaching an estimated 142,000 in 2022, according to Statistics Canada. The median household income of Langley residents is also rising; Township households that earn over $80,000 per year is 13 per cent higher than the Canadian average.

Local businesses and industrial and commercial developments are keeping pace with the Township’s steadily increasing population. There are over 7,000 registered businesses, including over 150 new businesses opening this year alone. In 2022, the total value of permits was over $151 million for commercial development and over $20 million for industrial development (Building Statistic – Dec 2022).

The Township of Langley is an exceptional place to work, offering exciting job opportunities, lower commute times, and a low unemployment rate. In 2020, BCBusiness Magazine ranked the Township #3 out of 46 municipalities and #1 in the Lower Mainland on their list of Best Cities for Work in BC. In 2022, the Township ranked an impressive #4 out of 50 communities in BCBusiness Magazine’s list of BC’s Most Resilient Cities.

The Township ensures our growing community stays active and entertained with over 13 recreation and cultural facilities, 86 parks, 81 playgrounds, 82 sports fields, and a 5,200-seat event centre and sports complex. Whether it is a love of nature, a thirst for fun and entertainment, or the quest for a healthy lifestyle, the Township also has heritage attractions, museums, golf courses, and nature trails and a wonderful selection of top-shelf restaurants, wineries, breweries, and premier retail and boutique shopping destinations.

The Township has experienced exceptional economic growth over the years, with more planned for the future, including the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain and salishan Place by the River.
