Top 24 Initiatives of 2024

Township of Langley Council continued taking action throughout 2024 to improve livability, public safety, recreation facilities and services, parks spaces, transportation, community development, and more. Following a successful 2023 year, additional significant initiatives were launched in 2024 to help the Township continue to thrive, well into the future. Here are the top 24 initiatives of 2024

Major amenities
- New Willoughby Community Centre - Planning began for a new facility at South Yorkson Community Park that will include a lap pool, leisure and hot pool, fitness facility, gymnasium, library, multipurpose rooms, and other supporting community recreation spaces. Read more.
- Construction continued on five new arenas - Three new ice and two dry floor arenas approved by Township Council are taking shape next to the Langley Events Centre. Read more.
- Smith Athletic Park youth soccer campus - Council approved funding for phases 1 and 2 of the park, and construction began in the Willoughby area to create a new place for the enjoyment and development of youth soccer. Read more.
- Jericho Booster Pump Station funding approved - Township of Langley Council approved $20.1 million for a new booster pump station to increase water system capacity in Willoughby. Read more.
- Fort Langley public waterfront preliminary concept plan and Haldi House rehabilitation - A plan for the Township’s waterfront lands in Fort Langley was developed and presented to the public for feedback. Read more.
Recreation and culture
- Recreation fees reduced for children, youth, and seniors - In addition to a new Summer Fun Pass, Council also approved a School’s Out recreation discount program for children and youth, providing a reduced admission rate on drop-in activities during spring break, winter holiday break and pro-d days. Council also approved several recreation fee reductions and lowered age levels for seniors, making it more affordable and accessible for residents to enjoy recreation activities in their community.
- Priority swimming lesson registration for Township residents - Council approved changes to provide Township residents with priority access to sought after swimming lesson registrations. Read more.
- Covered Bocce Courts - Were completed through a $475,000 investment providing a roof and lighting ensuring people can use the bocce courts in Willoughby Community Park year-round. Read more. New pickleball and tennis courts in Willoughby - Council approved 12 new fenced, lighted pickleball courts at the Langley Events Centre and 4 tennis courts at Yorkson Community Park. Read more.
- Township purchases Redwood Golf Course and approves golf discount programs - The golf course was purchased and Council approved discounts for residents and businesses in the Township. Read more.
- Council supported several community events - Canada Day, Langley Walk, Summer Nights in the Township, Holiday Lights in Williams Park, Forest Fest, Fire Hall Family Night, and others. Read more.
Safety and well-being
- Fire Department investments keeping our community safe - Council approved investments in new firefighters, a new fire truck, an increased focus on prevention/public education with two new inspectors, fire halls improvements, and a new replacement fire hall in Brookswood-Fernridge. Read more.
- Langley Meals on Wheels took ownership of Aldergrove Community Station House - The Township preserved a heritage building and found a use for the property that will benefit many residents. Read more.
- Childcare facilities planning - The Township, in partnership with the Province, sought input from people across the Township to assist in determining the location of potential new childcare facilities. Read more.
Transportation infrastructure
- Road enhancements approved by Council - Council endorsed planning and authorized funds for several more road enhancements to improve safety, accessibility, and traffic flow including 86 Avenue from 200 Street to 202 Street, the North Langley truck route, and traffic calming in Fort Langley. - 208 Street and Willowbrook Connector improvements - Work continued in 2024 to widen the roadway, and add bike lanes, multi-use pathways, lighting, landscaping, and transit stop enhancements. Read more.
- Old Yale Road improvements funded - Council approved funding for the design of the reconstruction option for Old Yale Road with a commemoration, a heritage feature, and traffic calming. Read more.
Parks and sports fields
- Aldergrove Athletic Park turf fields replaced - The east and west synthetic turf fields near Betty Gilbert Middle School received new, top-quality, all-weather playing surfaces. Read more.
- Northeast Latimer Park opened - This new multi-use community outdoor space includes a children’s play area, a natural wetland, walking paths, and several playing fields. Read more. Donna Gabriel Robins Park opened - New playing fields, a playground and walking paths are now open. Read more.
- Yorkson Community Park - Received a new parking lot along 82 Avenue for park users, and work continues on other upgrades. Read more. Noel Booth Community Park - Received trail repairs and replacements, including new raised pedestrian bridges, and work continues on other upgrades. Read more.
- Township contributes land for new park - The Municipal Natural Park goes towards a new Metro Vancouver regional park in South Langley that protects 44 hectares or forest and wetlands. Read more.
Community planning
- 200 Street 2040 / Langley Events Centre 2040 - Planning processes began to define a future vision for this emerging transit-oriented corridor, including a mixed-use Arts, Sports, and Entertainment District, anchored by the existing Langley Events Centre and Willoughby Community Park. 200 Street 2024 and LEC2040.
- Fraser Highway Employment Lands Area Plan being developed - The Township is developing a plan to increase the industrial land supply and provide employment opportunities for residents. Read more.
- Neighbourhood plans updated and adopted - Booth, Fernridge and Rinn Neighbourhood Plans received third and final reading and were adopted by Township Council in June to align with the Provincial small-scale multi-unit housing legislation (Bill 44). - Taking action against rural property owners illegally operating commercial trucking operations - The Township’s Bylaw Division took action against an increasing number of property owners using agricultural and rural land for commercial trucking operations, including storage and repairs.
