Township of Langley Enhances Tree Protection Through Education and Enforcement
Township of Langley is stepping up education and enforcement to protect trees and the overall tree canopy. Trees play a vital role in maintaining a healthy environment and balancing community growth with green spaces.
The Township’s Permits, Licences and Inspections Division is processing an increasing number of unauthorized tree removal files, jumping from 18 in 2024 to 24 in 2025. There have been 8 tree removals without the required permits so far in 2026, violating Tree Protection Bylaw 2019 No. 5478. Some property owners have removed multiple protected trees without authorization. This has led to enforcement of fines and fees for each tree, as well as compensation for any resulting damage, in accordance with the bylaw.
Property owners are ultimately responsible for complying with the tree protection bylaw, even if a contractor or service provider advises otherwise.
The Township continues to focus on bylaw awareness to protect trees, while increasing enforcement where needed. Submitting a complete application for tree removal typically allows for quick permit approval.
Residents planning to remove a tree are encouraged to visit tol.ca/treeprotection to learn more about permit requirements. Residents need to submit an application before moving forward with any tree removal, in compliance with Tree Protection Bylaw 2019 No. 5478. This process is helping maintain our vital tree canopy in the Township today, and for future generations.
