Township of Langley Parks Receive Federal Support
Improvements to Yorkson Community Park North and Aldergrove Athletic Park are both moving ahead with contributions from the federal government’s Canada Community-Building Fund. These projects will bring much needed outdoor recreation infrastructure to fast-growing communities in the Township.
"The federal government is proud to support the renovation of two parks in the Township of Langley through the Canada Community-Building Fund,” said John Aldag, Member of Parliament for Cloverdale—Langley City. “These projects will allow families in and around these neighborhoods to have improved recreational spaces where they can come together to get fit, enjoy hobbies and create memories.”
“Langley is a vibrant community that continues to blossom, and the upgrades to Yorkson Community Park North and Aldergrove Athletic Park bring more people together through an active lifestyle,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “It’s a pleasure to work with all orders of government on projects such as these to ensure the health and safety of residents and visitors.”
“Our Township parks provide great opportunities for people to get outside and be active. It’s important to have options available for all residents in our park spaces, and these new amenities in Willoughby and Aldergrove will provide years of future fun and enjoyment for all ages,” said Township of Langley Mayor Eric Woodward.
At Yorkson Community Park North work is now underway on a new spray park, playground, picnic area, parking lot, washroom facilities, associated landscape and pedestrian areas, a synthetic turf field and warm-up area, and a 75-stall parking lot with drop-off lane and related works at 84 Avenue. The Canada Community-Building Fund is providing $2 million towards the $20.5 million project. More details on this project can be read here.
In addition, a new covered gathering area at Aldergrove Athletic Park is receiving $130,000 from the Canada Community-Building Fund, and will provide a new all-weather space for residents to enjoy with friends and family. This is part of a $132,000 improvement project.
The Canada Community-Building Fund is a permanent source of federal funding for local infrastructure, administered by the Union of BC Municipalities. Funds are provided to communities up front, twice a year, and can be strategically invested across 18 project categories to address local priorities. Municipalities can also pool, bank and borrow against this funding.
