salishan Place by the River brings history to life with an immersive, hands-on learning experience for various age groups. Our curriculum-connected programs are designed to engage students with the rich cultural heritage and stories of the Fort Langley community.

September to December

Archaeology Adventure
(Grades 6-7)

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
10:00 to 11:30am   I   12:00 to 1:30pm
Location: salishan Place by the River

Step into the shoes of an archaeologist for a day! In this 90-minute hands-on program, students will engage in a simulated excavation, unearthing replica artifacts, documenting their findings, and analyzing their significance. They will explore the technologies and activities represented by the artifacts, gaining a deeper understanding of past cultures and the importance of archaeological practices.

Fraser Valley Families
(Kindergarten to Grade 2)

Discover the stories that shape our communities in the Fraser Valley. In this engaging program, students explore the lives, traditions, and experiences of families who have called the Fraser Valley home. Through interactive activities, participants will uncover how culture and daily life have evolved over time. By making connections between past and present, students will gain a deeper appreciation for the diverse voices and shared histories that continue to define the region today.

January to June

Colonization of the Fraser Valley
(Grades 4-7)

Location: salishan Place by the River

Dive into the history of colonization and the reserves system in the Fraser Valley with this interactive program. Students will participate in hands-on sessions exploring the pre-colonization landscape, engage in discussions on colonization and reserves, and learn about the resilience and cultural strength of Indigenous peoples. This program provides a foundational understanding of these historical events and their lasting effects on Indigenous communities.

Toys and Traditions
(Grades 1-3)

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday

Location: salishan Place by the River

Step into the past as students take part in hands-on play and storytelling. Students will discover traditional Indigenous games, compare toys from long ago to today, and learn how play connects people across time. Students will rotate through interactive stations, experiment with simple toys, and create their own toy using basic materials while exploring how toys help us understand community and change over time.

1920s Schoolhouse Experience
(Grades 3-6)

Location: Lochiel schoolhouse at Campbell Valley Regional Park

Travel back in time to the 1920s with our Lochiel schoolhouse program at Campbell Valley Regional Park. Originally built in 1924 and relocated to the park in the 1980s, this one-room schoolhouse has been restored to reflect its historical context. Students will experience what school life was like in the early 20th century through interactive activities and lessons conducted in this authentic setting.

Self-Guided Programs 

Students can embark on a self-guided walking tour that includes:

• maps of the local area, along with accompanying notes for significant sites
• additional information about the area and each stop on the map
• activity booklets for students to complete during their tour

Nature Exploration Tour
(All Ages)

Monday to Friday
Anytime between 10:00am to 4:00pm

Explore the great outdoors with our self-guided nature tour at salishan Place by the River. Suitable for all ages, this 45 to 60 minute tour provides group leaders with program materials, including a map of the local area highlighting various plants and trees, as well as notes about their ecological significance and traditional uses by Coast Salish peoples. An activity booklet is provided for the group to complete during their walk.

Fort Langley Community Heritage Walk
(All Ages)

Monday to Friday
Anytime between 10:00am to 4:00pm

Discover the rich history of Fort Langley with our self-guided community tour. Suitable for all ages, this 60-minute walk provides group leaders with program materials to uncover hidden gems, learn about significant landmarks, and immerse themselves in the captivating history that makes Fort Langley a unique destination. An activity booklet is provided for the group to complete during their walk.
