Community Forest Management Strategy
The Township of Langley’s Community Forest Management Strategy was unanimously approved by Council on May 9, 2022, and provides the Township with a clear vision, guidance, and measurable targets to sustain and increase the community forest.
Trees provides important benefits to the community such as:
- capturing and cleaning stormwater
- reducing the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect
- providing shade
- improving mental health
- providing habitat for wildlife
- building energy savings
- sequestering carbon from the atmosphere
Current tree canopy coverage across Township communities ranges from 7% in Willowbrook, up to 35% in Brookswood-Fernridge, with an overall coverage of 23% in the Urban Containment Boundary (UCB). The Community Forest Management Strategy sets a target of 30% coverage in the UCB by 2050, which is integrated into Big Move 5 in the Climate Action Strategy:
Resilient Natural Systems – Increase tree canopy and rainwater capture from current levels by 2030.
