Garbage Cart

The Township of Langley offers garbage collection to those properties within our garbage collection area. If your property is outside of the garbage collection area, see Waste Services for Rural Properties.

What goes inside

Carts should be curbside by 7:30am on collection day.

Garbage carts should only contain items that are not accepted in the Green Cart, curbside recycling program, or cannot be taken back to a recycling depot. Individual garbage items must not exceed 2.5 metres (8.2 feet) in length or 1.2 metres in width. Wondering where a specific item goes? Try our What Goes Where? tool.

If your garbage wasn't picked up or is delayed

First, check for a tag. A tag may indicate if garbage couldn’t be picked up because it contained unaccepted items or if it is extra garbage that needs an Extra Garbage Sticker. If no tag was left, call the Township's garbage contractor, Sierra Waste Services Ltd., at 604-530-3939.

Banned materials

Certain materials are banned from Metro Vancouver disposal facilities. Bans are in place on items that are:

  • Recyclable
  • Compostable
  • Hazardous to collection workers, the public, and the environment

If banned materials are found in your garbage, it will not be collected.

Pet waste can be hazardous, and is listed as prohibited. However, small quantities may be double-bagged (with air removed) and disposed of in the garbage. To see preferred options for disposing of waste from dogs, cats and other pets, visit Metro Vancouver’s website.

Household hazardous waste can be disposed of year-round at various facilities.

Extra garbage?

Garbage cart lids must fully close in order to be collected. Overfilled carts may not be collected. If you have more garbage than can fit in your garbage cart(s):

Purchase Extra Garbage stickers

Extra Garbage StickerHouseholds that occasionally produce extra garbage can purchase Extra Garbage stickers for $3.50/bag or 80L can. Extra garbage will only be picked up on days designated for garbage pick-up (see your collection calendar). Stickers are available for purchase at the following locations:

  • Civic Facility (20338 – 65 Avenue)
  • All Community and Recreation Centres
  • Lee’s Market (23320 Mavis Avenue, Fort Langley)
  • IGA 2410 (200 Street, Brookswood)
  • IGA 48th Ave (102, 22259 – 48 Ave)
  • FreshCO (27566 Fraser Highway, Aldergrove)
  • Fresh St. Market (20159 - 88 Avenue, Walnut Grove)
  • salishan Place by the River (23430 Mavis Avenue, Fort Langley)

Extra Garbage stickers are also available by mail. To order, call Township Customer Service at 604-534-3211.

Request a larger or additional garbage cart

Households that regularly produce extra garbage may exchange their cart for a larger size or order up to two (2) additional garbage carts. Only a registered property owner may request changes to carts. Additional fees will be added to the garbage collection utility fee on your annual taxes:
  • Exchange a 120L garbage cart for a 240L = $95 more per year (2025 rates)
  • Additional 120L garbage cart = $95 more per year (2025 rates)
  • Additional 240L garbage cart = $190 more per year (2025 rates)
Submit a Cart Request. A $50 per cart administration fee may apply.

Large Item Pick Up

Residents with municipal garbage collection may have up to four large items picked up by appointment at any time throughout the year. Items may be picked up all at once or spread out over the course of the year. Unused pick-ups do not carry forward into subsequent years.

Submit your Large Item Pick Up request online, or Call Sierra Waste Services Ltd. (604-530-3939) to schedule a pick up.

Public garbage drop-off facilities

To personally dispose of extra garbage, there are three Metro Vancouver Recycling and Waste Centres located nearby. For locations, hours of operation, and materials accepted, refer to Metro Vancouver's Disposal Facilities web page.

To estimate the cost of disposing your items, try the estimator tool.

Can I use plastic bags to contain waste in my garbage cart?

Yes, plastic bags are permitted in the garbage cart. Remember that plastic bags are not permitted in the Green Cart, including those labelled as 'compostable.'
