The Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre has a new name for the outdoor portion of the facility, following an announcement on Friday, January 26.

The exterior portion of the ACUCC will be known as the “Otter Co-op Outdoor Experience,” in recognition of its new sponsor, the Otter Co-op. The Co-op joins previously announced title name sponsor Aldergrove Credit Union as a significant community business that is excited about partnering with the new facility.

Members of Township of Langley Council and staff gathered with Otter Co-op Board members and staff to symbolically unveil a new facility sign at 27032 Fraser Highway, the site of the Township’s newest recreation complex and aquatic facility. The “Otter Co-op Outdoor Experience” will be a major attraction when the new Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre opens this summer.

“It is very exciting to see such strong community support for this new facility,” said Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese. “We continue to watch construction progress, and over the next several months the ACUCC will really begin to take shape. We will have a lot to celebrate when it opens to the public on the Canada Day long weekend.”

The Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre will feature a 500+ seat arena with an NHL size ice surface and an indoor running track around the second level. Also inside will be a fitness centre, fitness studio room, and a multipurpose room.

Outside, the Centre will include a canopy-covered outdoor pool area with a shallower leisure pool, a six-lane 25-metre competitive swimming pool, including a deep end for diving, and a hot tub. Adjacent to the pools will be a sauna and a steam room. The pool area will be open year-round. It will be heated in part by solar panels and by using excess energy produced from cooling the ice at the adjacent arena.

The exterior complex will also feature a seasonal outdoor water park with waterslides, a tidal pool, current channel, a children’s aquaplay structure, dry playground, and picnic area.

The Otter Co-op’s initial financial contribution of $250,000 will be for the first five-year operating period.

“I am very excited to announce the Otter Co-op’s participation in the outdoor area of the new Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre,” said Otter Co-op Board President Angie McDougall. “When this opportunity was presented to the Board of Directors, we were immediately onside. It fits well with our vision of being the consumer’s first choice by connecting community, service, satisfaction, and profit sharing where we live, work, and play. This is just one more way that the Otter Co-op can continue to support and invest in our community and provide value.”

“Otter Co-op is proud to support the Otter Co-op Outdoor Experience at the ACUCC,” said Jack Nicholson, CEO of the Otter Co-op. “Aldergrove has been Otter’s home for over 95 years, and we could not be more excited to assist in the development of this venture. Our members and guests in Aldergrove have been very generous to our Co-operative since we started here in 1922, and we look forwards to repaying this generosity through local investment and growing the community spaces around us.”

“We are also excited to join the Aldergrove Credit Union, another longstanding partner and community builder, in strengthening Aldergrove, following their investment in the upcoming Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre,” Nicholson said.

The Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre was designed to meet the needs of people of all ages and interests and will complement, not duplicate, existing Township recreation and aquatic opportunities.

An environmentally conscious project, the complex will be home to the Aldergrove Kodiaks hockey team, Aldergrove Minor Hockey, the Aldergrove Figure Skating Club, and an anticipated new Aldergrove swim club.

Froese noted that the new Community Centre will draw people from throughout the Township to downtown Aldergrove and be a great step towards revitalizing Aldergrove’s Downtown Core.

Construction Starts on Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre

Ground was officially broken on February 3, signalling the start of construction of the new Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre.

The Centre, a unique recreation complex and outdoor aquatic facility that will be enjoyed by people throughout the region, will open in June of 2018.

The Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre will feature a canopy-covered outdoor pool area with a shallow leisure end, six competitive swim lanes, and a deep end for diving. An environmentally conscious project, the pool will be open year-round and heated in the wintertime, using excess energy produced from cooling the ice at the adjacent arena. The Centre’s arena will include a fitness centre, indoor walking surface, and multipurpose rooms.

The complex will also feature an outdoor water park with waterslides, tidal pool, current channel, a children’s aqua structure, and playground.

Members of Township of Langley Council joined federal and provincial representatives at 27032 Fraser Highway on Friday for the ground breaking ceremony, and to announce an exciting financial contribution from the Federal Government’s Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component – National and Regional Projects.

A federal grant of up to $9.881 million will be put towards the project, which, along with the budget approved by Township Council, will allow the centre to be built as envisioned without any additional cost to taxpayers, or cutting back on features.

“Financing something of this magnitude is a big job with many variables, and the Township had budgeted for the majority of the project through past or future land sales,” said Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese. “This much-appreciated federal funding will alleviate some of the pressure on the timing of those sales, and means there will be no tax increase required to fund construction of this project.”

“The grant will also help pay for some additional features, such as a sauna and steam room, which were going to be added in later, but can now be included at the outset,” Froese said. Other enhancements will include the addition of solar panels for heating the facility, rain water harvesting, additional change facilities, an expanded playground, and additional features that focus on youth recreation.

Last year, Council decided to add a canopy cover over the outdoor pool, and a deep end and diving board extension.

Since announcing the project, the Township worked to secure the federal grant with representatives from other levels of government.

“We would like to express our gratitude and appreciation to Cloverdale-Langley City MP John Aldag, who was instrumental in securing this funding,” Froese said. “He brought forward the possibility of this grant to Council and worked very hard to make it happen.”

“We would also like to thank Minister Rich Coleman, MLA for Fort Langley-Aldergrove, for his valuable support and recognition of the importance of this project to our community,” Froese added. “It was a lot of work, but for a very good cause, and it was wonderful to see all levels of government unite and work together for this excellent outcome.”

The Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre was designed to meet the needs of people of all ages and interests and will complement, not duplicate, existing Township recreation and aquatic opportunities.

The complex will be home to the Aldergrove Kodiaks hockey team, Aldergrove Minor Hockey, the Aldergrove Figure Skating Club, and an anticipated new Aldergrove Swim Club. Froese noted that the new Community Centre will draw people from throughout the region to downtown Aldergrove and be a great step towards revitalizing Aldergrove’s Downtown Core.

In August 2016, it was announced that the facility would be named the Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre, after its naming sponsor.
