Mayor's Message

Mayor Jack FroeseGood evening everyone, I hope you all enjoyed Easter and Spring Break.

Tuesday, March 20 was the annual Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce Leadership Panel discussion where City of Langley Mayor Ted Schaffer, Langley MLA Mary Polak, Fort Langley - Aldergrove MLA Rich Coleman and myself answered questions from the audience pertaining to transportation and social issues facing the Langleys.

On Tuesday, March 27, Shane Simpson, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, visited the office and we discussed several items that were Langley-specific, including the Quality Inn Supportive housing project, the Langley Youth Resource Centre, and working together towards ending social issues such as homelessness.

Thursday, March 29 I had the opportunity as a sports fan to promote the Vancouver Giants in an interview for a nationally televised program in support of our Giants. I want to congratulate the hockey team and coaches on their well-played season and wish them the best over the summer. We look forward to the 2018/2019 season at the Langley Events Centre.

On Thursday, April 5, I attended the Fraser Valley Career Connection Conference in Abbotsford and had the opportunity to hear some amazing young speakers. The theme of the event was “Bridging the Gap” and focussed on jobs and millennials in the workforce.

Thursday, April 5 was also the Township’s annual Volunteer Appreciation evening at the Langley Events Centre. Congratulations to Karl and Toni Driese in receiving the John and Muriel Arnason Award, Sylvia Anderson for receiving the Eric Flowerdew Volunteer Award, and Laura Stead for winning the Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award. The nominees were all amazing and we congratulate all of them.

Saturday, April 7 I attended a dinner for the homeless and was able to provide a few words, an Easter Dinner Welcome. Thank you to the organizers who provide a dinner once a month to the homeless and less fortunate.

I also want to mention the Mayors’ Caucus that took place last month in Squamish; it was a very informative event. Topics of discussion included the opioid crises, proposed marijuana regulation, and the rural-urban divide. It’s always informative to hear from other mayors about what is facing their communities and the ways in which we are all dealing with similar issues and looking at ways to tackle those concerns.

I wanted to mention the Langley Regional Airport which appears to be getting closer to the completion of its new building. There are some photos on hand and we are looking forward to the official opening in late June/early July.

Lastly, work on the 208 Street Overpass is getting nearer to completion and today, the new lanes were temporarily opened. Traffic will shift between the old and the new portions as the rest of the work is done. They still have to widen the sidewalks and put in safety fencing on the east (old) side, do some work on the median, as well as landscaping and paving, but the project should be completed around the end of May. This is great news for those travel in the area, and it appears this project will be completed on time and on budget.
