- Make a Household Emergency Kit that includes food, blankets, water, a flashlight, a battery-powered radio and necessary medication. This will ensure you can be self sufficient for a minimum of 72 hours. It is also good to have a kit in your car which includes snacks, blankets and water. For more information visit: Personal Emergency Supply Kit
- Make a Household Emergency Preparedness Plan so you and your family can know what to do during emergencies.

- Inspect trees for signs of weakness or damage. Guard your home from falling branches by pruning dead branches and removing dead trees on your property.
- Store or tie down outdoor furniture or loose objects including garbage cans, barbecues, and lawn furniture.
- Clear catch basins and drains free of debris to avoid excess water and potential flooding.
- Apply sand or salt to walkways and sidewalks.

- Follow all signage and detour directions. If a road is closed due to flooding, do not attempt to drive through the closure, even if you feel your vehicle can do so.
- Avoid unnecessary travel, as road conditions can be unpredictable. When driving, watch for trees or branches on roadways, and check for road closures before heading out. If you’re caught in your vehicle, pull off the road if it becomes too dangerous to drive, stop away from trees or power lines, stay in your vehicle, and put your hazard lights on.
- If a power outage occurs, turn off all lights (except one in a main area), unplug appliances, and turn down thermostat to reduce the initial demand when the power is restored. Keep doors, windows and drapes closed, and close off extra rooms so heat is concentrated in one area.
- Keep away from downed power lines and avoid walking in wooded areas.
- Dress for the weather

- Assess your property for damage and take necessary steps to make required repairs.
- Clear catch basins around your property of leaves, sticks, snow, ice or other debris to help minimize potential flooding. Clear snow and ice from adjacent sidewalks. Snow in residential areas must be removed from sidewalks and walkways within 24 hours of the first accumulation of snow. In commercial and industrial areas, snow must be removed from sidewalks and walkways by 10am. Cleared snow cannot be pushed on roadways, as it may hinder vehicles.
- Check on your family, friends and neighbours especially those who are elderly.
