South Mills Champs Amphitheatre announced

November 17, 2021

Champs Fresh Farms of Aldergrove announced their sponsorship of the Amphitheatre at salishan Place by the River, the Township of Langley’s new arts, culture, and heritage centre. This facility, envisioned in partnership with the four land-based q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie), q̓ʷɑ:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen), Máthkwi (Matsqui) and se’mya’me (Semiahmoo) First Nations, is currently under construction in Fort Langley.

The outdoor open-air Amphitheatre will be an eight-tiered (grass-covered) auditorium on the south hillside of the new facility. The Township’s Arts and Culture Division plans to animate the new venue with regular concerts and activities much like it does at the Willoughby Community Park Amphitheatre. The Willoughby venue hosts the annual Summer Festival Series, suspended in 2020 but restarting in 2022. Additionally, the Arts and Culture Division anticipates that the Amphitheatre will be used as one of the stage areas for local festivals held regularly in Fort Langley.

“South Mill Champs is honoured to be a corporate partner with Langley Township and sponsor the Amphitheatre at salishan Place by the River,” says Mike Pimlott, General Manager of Champs Fresh Farms, South Mill Champs mushroom farm located in Aldergrove. “The impressive venue will allow the community to experience the arts close to home and bring tourists to our shining city.”

“We are pleased that South Mill Champs is supporting this significant initiative in Fort Langley with a $100,000 contribution,” stated Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese. “The amphitheatre at salishan will be a great community gathering place where arts and culture will thrive, and citizens can be entertained”.

While the construction of the Amphitheatre is planned for the summer of 2022, it won’t likely be available for concerts and other uses until the grass has grown sufficiently to support audiences.

Freybe Gourmet Foods sponsors interpretive gardens

October 19, 2021

Freybe Gourmet Foods today announced sponsorship of the gardens and outdoor learning spaces at salishan Place by the River, the Township of Langley’s new arts, culture and heritage centre. This facility, envisioned in partnership with the four land-based q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie), q̓ʷɑ:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen), Máthxwi (Matsqui) and se’mya’me (Semiahmoo) First Nations, is currently under construction in Fort Langley.

The planned gardens are part of the Township’s commitment to reconciliation with local First Nations, Indigenous, and Métis communities. A section of the gardens will be devoted to plant species connected to Indigenous culture, tradition, and medicine. The gardens will provide enhanced learning opportunities to visitors of the centre via QR code interpretive signage and are the planned location of future centre programming.

Another portion of the garden will feature species rooted in the objectives of the Township of Langley’s Climate Action Strategy – those found in the province’s coastal rainforests as well as drought resistant varieties. Nestled between these two gardens will be an outdoor classroom, an open-air space designed for school programs, walking tours, speaker series, and Township arts, culture and heritage programs.

“This sponsorship provides Freybe with the opportunity to work with Indigenous communities on their lands. As our organization learns more about our relationship with Indigenous peoples, we hope to push other businesses to support these initiatives as a way to create space for dialogue and learning,” says Angela Doro, President of Freybe Gourmet Foods. “Investing in salishan Place by the River is a collaborative way for us to participate in activities that move us towards truth and meaningful reconciliation.”

The installation of the gardens is planned for Fall 2022 and available for viewing by Spring 2023. The Township is still seeking additional corporate and community sponsors to help complete some of the centre’s interior spaces including the presentation theatre, the archive, the art gallery and its future exhibitions.

Heritage Society sponsors salishan Place by the River classrooms

The Langley Heritage Society is sponsoring the classroom spaces at salishan Place by the River, the new arts, culture and heritage centre under construction in Fort Langley. This sponsorship will benefit students of all ages using the new facility.

Proceeds of the $60,000 gift will help equip and furnish the classrooms, making them dynamic and creative learning environments for children. Langley Centennial Museum’s School programs reach approximately 30,000 students annually. Salishan Place by the River, with the help of the Langley Heritage Society will work to increase that number significantly.

The Langley Heritage Society has been a committed partner of heritage programming throughout the Township of Langley for many years now. The Society funds nine inner city schools, annually providing the resources to cover transportation and programming costs at the museum. This funding assists about 2,500 students each year who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend.

“We are committed to connecting the youth of our community to Langley’s rich and diverse history. The sponsorship of the classrooms at the new centre will help children become engaged citizens supporting museums, cultural institutions, and community heritage in the future,” said Langley Heritage Society president Fred Pepin.

“This generous sponsorship from the Langley Heritage Society will benefit our community for years to come. These classrooms will provide valuable spaces for sharing learning and understanding of our comprehensive community history,” said Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese.

Built to Class “A” museum standards, the facility will host permanent and temporary in-house exhibitions, and borrowed displays from across North America

The Corporation of the Township of Langley is seeking responses to an Invitation for Sponsorship Opportunities from parties interested in becoming sponsors of salishan Place by the River - A Unique Arts, Culture and Heritage Centre in Fort Langley.

All interested parties are invited to submit a response. The responses sought at this time may include but are not limited to the following:

Name branding opportunities.
Partnership proposals that will help complete the spaces within salishan.
Other opportunities that would provide benefits to a sponsor, the Township and users of salishan.

$3 million for new museum and cultural complex in Fort Langley

The Township of Langley is very pleased to receive $3 million from the Government of Canada in support of a new 36,000-square-foot cultural centre and museum complex in Fort Langley.

Provincial funding for destination tourism infrastructure

February 26, 2021

Langley, BC – On February 25, 2021, the BC Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport announced that the Township of Langley will receive $711,354 in Community Economic Recovery Infrastructure Program (CERIP) funding for its new arts, culture, and heritage facility, salishan Place by the River. This facility is being developed in Fort Langley, in partnership with Kwantlen First Nation, and in collaboration with Katzie, Matsqui, and Semiahmoo First Nations, on whose traditional territories the Township was established, the Waceya Métis Society, and the Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society. Representatives from these communities and organizations are currently visioning exhibitions and programs for the community and Indigenous galleries at salishan.

This funding, awarded under the Destination Development stream of CERIP, supports economic resilience, tourism, heritage, and urban and rural economic development projects in communities impacted by COVID-19. Fort Langley has been greatly affected by the pandemic, resulting in the reduction, cancellation, and/or postponement of many events and festivals, and reduced operational capacities of many local businesses.

Destination Development funds will assist in outfitting the third-floor convention centre amenities at salishan, including a 167-seat theatre, a reception/banquet hall with commercial kitchen, and a rooftop outdoor gathering space. These enhancements will encourage year-round activities, such as festivals, arts and craft fairs, music and theatre performances, and lectures, drawing people to the community and allowing Fort Langley to rebound.
