Heritage
Old Yale Road is an important part of the Murrayville community and significant to early road building in BC. This concrete road, originally constructed in 1922, is facing deterioration and requires a long-term plan that takes into account the needs of its users and its unique historic attributes.
In 1897, the road was gravelled but it was not until 1922 that more lasting improvements were made through the pouring of concrete segments between Glover Road/Fraser Highway and 216 Street. These concrete panels were very likely the first use of concrete as a road surface in British Columbia.
Old Yale Road has been the focus of multiple heritage conservation efforts. In 1993, it was added to the Township’s Heritage Inventory as an important early transportation link. In 2008, it was added to the Township’s Heritage Register. In 2010, it was designated as part of the Murrayville Heritage Conservation Area Community Plan.
Improvement options
The following options are being considered:
Conservation option: This option will retain a portion of the road in place and proposes to close the roadway to through vehicular traffic while permitting pedestrians, cyclists, and emergency vehicles on the road.
Commemoration option: This option will involve the reconstruction of a portion of the roadway in concrete in recognition of its historic past while bringing the road up to modern standards.
Reconstruction option: This option will involve the reconstruction of the roadway in asphalt, similar to other roadways and includes the addition of marked on-street bike lanes.
