Social Sustainability
Our social sustainability vision is a Township that is connected, inclusive and resilient – a place where all can enjoy and contribute to a great quality of life.
The Township’s Social Sustainability Strategy is our roadmap for achieving this vision, covering important issues like social inclusion and equity, Indigenous relations, housing affordability, and community health and safety. This Strategy is complemented by various other Township plans and initiatives that collectively support a thriving community, now and into the future.

A community approach
Social sustainability is a shared responsibility among all levels of government and requires involvement from numerous organizations, groups and individuals. Lacking a formal mandate and with limited resources, local governments need to collaborate with others to achieve their social sustainability goals.

Equity, diversity, and inclusion
The Township supports a number of initiatives that celebrate the diversity of our community and promote social inclusion. We also recognize that there is much more work to do. Differences in age, gender, ability, race, income and sexual orientation, among others, mean that some people face more barriers than others in fully participating in community life. To strengthen our efforts in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion, we are developing an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Framework. The EDI Framework will help us better integrate equity considerations across all Township programs and services. It will facilitate a transition from an equality approach, where everyone gets treated the same, to an equity approach that recognizes specific needs and reduces barriers to fair outcomes.
The development of the EDI Framework is being guided by an EDI Trailmap endorsed by Township Council on June 13, 2022.
