Barb Martens
Barb is a 29-year resident of Walnut Grove for where she has raised her children. Their family was heavily involved in youth sports and the arts community for the last two decades.

Professional career
Barb holds a BA from Trinity Western University in psychology and education, certificates from the Justice Institute of BC in Police Studies, and a certificate from Royal Roads University “THRIVE: Women and Leadership.”
Barb worked in public service for 29 years, spending 9 years with the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction where she was instrumental in launching the “Early Detection and Prevention Program”. Barb then went on to work 20 years as a sworn police officer with the Vancouver Police Department. Barb spent her police career working in patrol, neighbourhood policing, crime analysis, as a long-term acting sergeant in crime control, and as a field trainer to several police recruits. Most notable was her work as the VPD liaison officer to a variety of housing models connecting with operators, staff, residents, the surrounding resident and business community and building relationships and connections with some of Vancouver’s most vulnerable citizens.
Barb received two Vancouver Police Chief commendations and is the only two-time recipient of the BC Borstal Associations awards for her work with homeless and a broad scope of housing models, and for her work with the Vancouver hotel community.
Barb is a founding member of BC Women in Law Enforcement, a non-profit organization whose vision is to strengthen, unite and promote women in law enforcement in the province of BC.
