Old Yale Park Open House
Outcome
Option 1 (the restoration plan) was identified as the preferred option and work was completed in the northwest section of Old Yale Park in 2022.
Overview
The Township of Langley is looking for feedback on the future of a section of Old Yale Park (Old Yale Road and 224 Street). While most of the park will remain as-is, the Township is looking to restore or enhance an area at the northwest side of the park. There are two main options for the area:
- A naturalized restoration plan that will see the park restored to a similar, pre-construction state
- A new pollinator garden for the park that could include extensions to the trail network, seating, and interpretive signage
To present options to residents and park users, understand their preferences, as well as consider other thoughts and ideas, an open house will be held on Thursday, September 29 at the James Hill Elementary School library (22144 Old Yale Road) from 5:30 to 7:30pm. During the open house, a printed version of the survey below will be available to complete.
For those unable to attend the open house in-person, the display boards and an online version of the survey are available below to share feedback and participate in the public engagement process. All feedback submissions are due by Tuesday, October 11 at 11:59pm.
The results of the public engagement will inform next steps for Old Yale Park, with presentation to Council through the 2023 budget process where additional funding is required.
Option 1: the restoration plan
The proposed restoration plan for the northwest section of Old Yale Park includes development of a meadow area, natural wildlife shelter, trees, and ground cover. The detention pond, aspen grove, existing meadow/riparian areas, and trail would remain the same.
Proceeding with the restoration plan would not require additional capital funding (i.e, the funding for this option falls within the existing 2022 Operating Budget as approved by Council).
Option 2: the pollinator garden
The proposed pollinator garden plan for Old Yale Park includes the installation of a new garden comprised of pollinator-friendly plants with a new granular pedestrian trail, bird houses, and benches, as well as interpretive signage. The garden would also include a mason bee hotel to provide a nesting area for bees. The detention pond, aspen grove, existing meadow/riparian areas, and trail would remain the same.
Proceeding with the pollinator garden plan would require additional capital funding of approximately $140,000 (i.e., additional funding for this option would be submitted to Council for consideration as part of the 2023 Capital Budget process)
