Adopt-a-Catch Basin

The Township of Langley has approximately 9,000 catch basins, that remove excess water from our streets. Water collected by catch basins lead into local streams and waterways. Throughout the year, catch basins get blocked by leaves, snow, ice, and litter that could lead to flooding.

Township crews work hard to regularly remove leaves from streets and keep catch basins clear, but it is difficult to attend every one of them, especially after a weather event.

This is why we need your help! When you sign up to adopt a catch basin and keep it clear, you:

  • help protect private and public property from localized flooding
  • prevent litter and debris from entering waterways such as streams and rivers
  • make a difference in your community by helping to keep your neighbourhood clean and safe

Eligibility

  • Participants must reside or have a valid business license in the Township of Langley.
  • Participants must review and follow “How to care for your catch basin” and the “Safety Guidelines."
  • Participant must report the date cleaned after each clean up event.

How to Apply

  1. Browse the map below for catch basins that are available for adoption. We recommend selecting catch basin(s) nearest your place of business/residence.
  2. Copy the catch basin number(s) you want to adopt to include in your application, select up to six.
    Catch basin ID
  3. Fill in the online application form. Please allow up to three weeks for your application to be processed. If you have questions, please email adopt@tol.ca.

How to care for your catch basin

  1. Monitor your catch basin(s) regularly throughout the year, particularly during the following times:
    • after a heavy rainfall
    • in the fall when trees lose their leaves
    • in the winter after significant snowfall
    • in the spring when debris from the streets may build up
  2. If you see that the catch basin is blocked, use a rake, shovel or broom to clear the catch basin grate and curb. When possible, work from the sidewalk to brush debris away from the catch basin. Face traffic when clearing debris to be aware of dangers.
  3. Dispose of organic debris in your Green Cart or backyard composter and put trash/litter in your garbage cart.
  4. Report the date that you cleaned your catch basin through the online map.

Safety

Your safety is the number one priority. Read our Guide to Safe Litter Clean Up before your clean up. Remember: do not pick up any hazardous, sharp or heavy materials. Instead, report the location of the material to the Township at  604-532-7300 or opsinfo@tol.ca and the items will be collected by the Township.

Frequently Asked Questions
