The Township of Langley’s Social Sustainability Strategy addresses the quality of life of both current and future generations. The Strategy’s Priority #3: Housing and Food includes an action to develop a food strategy that complements the Agricultural Viability Strategy and explores opportunities to increase access to healthy, safe, culturally appropriate, and local food. The Township, with the assistance of Langley Meals on Wheels and the Let’s Talk Food Aldergrove group of non-profits, has initiated a pilot project to gain insights into Aldergrove’s access to local food.
Project goals
The goals of the project are to:
- Identify the barriers to, and opportunities for, community food security and food access in the area;
- Identify existing food assets in the community;
- Raise public awareness about food security in the community; and
- Identify champions who will support the implementation of the recommendations of the Food Systems pilot project.
