Child Care Facilities Planning
Overview
The Township of Langley, in partnership with the Province of BC’s New Spaces Fund (NSF), gathered input from people across the Township to assist in the location of potential new child care facilities. For complete details see the November 6, 2023 Child Care Facilities Report to Council.
The Township of Langley’s Child Care Action Plan addresses the need for more quality child care spaces across the Township. In pursuit of expanding child care services in the Township, the Child Care Action Plan identifies actions to leverage provincial capital funding (Action E) and to transform underused spaces (Action F). Provincial funding is available for the construction of child care facilities located on Township lands. Township park lands have been selected for further study and public feedback.
Background
The goals of the project are to:
- identify locations in the Township for potential child care facilities
- utilize Provincial funding to pay for construction
- improve access to child care services
- determine the feasibility of locating child care facilities on park space
Fraser Health is the licensing agency for child care in the Township and their data shows that the Township has 560 fewer child care spaces since 2020. Staff recommend undeveloped or passive park space within developed parks as a unique opportunity to provide affordable child care through Provincial funding and Township land. The identified parks are located close to existing community infrastructure such as schools and recreation centres and are intended to be convenient for families.
