Key Park Features
- The project is being developed adjacent to the new Northeast Latimer Elementary School.
- The park includes full size and half size playing field that also includes space for informal baseball area.
- The playground areas include an accessible rubberized embankment zone complete with embankment slide, climbing ropes and steppers; as well as a toddler play structure and accessible swing.
- A nature play zone includes a beginning and advanced climbing structure as well as climbable boulders that were found on property and reused within the design.
- The playground area also includes freshly planted beds and wildflower garden space, as well as access to natural space beneath the preserved cedar, fir, and pine understory of the site.
- A drinking fountain, and multiple seating opportunities for picnic seating and benches were included in the design, and consideration was given to a blend of sunny and shaded seating opportunities that also consider sightlines and summer breeze.
- The project includes a new provincially approved watercourse on both properties which compensates for the development of the sites. Additional environmental compensation is also being provided for the community at an offsite location.
Interesting Park Facts
- The project construction began at the time that a red-tailed hawk nest was identified. The project team worked with biologists to determine the appropriate measures to protect the nest until the hawks fledged their nest.
- Invasive yellow flag iris was found on the property during construction and was appropriately removed.
- The largest boulder in the playground (roughly 10’ round) was found in the middle of the playing field and was reused on site as a playground feature.
- The cedar logs wrapping the playground were reused from dead trees found on site.
- Heavy mulch beds and some watering was included in the design to help preserve the cedar grove on site for climate resilience.
- Approximately 46 trees were added on site around the playground and watercourse, and 168 young trees will be added offsite as environmental compensation
