
Telecommunication Tower
Applications for Telecommunication Towers are reviewed in accordance with the Telecommunication Tower Policy.
This policy guides how new telecommunication towers are reviewed and approved in line with federal regulations from Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) Canada.
Key policy highlights
1. Location preferences
Co-location is encouraged: Applicants must first try to share existing towers within 500m.
Preferred locations:
- Industrial and mixed employment areas
- Non-residential zones
- Sites far from residential areas
- Areas with mature landscaping for visual screening
Discouraged locations:
- Environmentally sensitive areas (as per the Official Community Plan)
- Riparian lands and wetlands
- Heritage sites
- Locations that obstruct public views
2. Design preferences
Towers should be unobtrusive and visually minimized.
Preferred designs include:
- Slim line monopoles
- Use of landscaping and stealth design techniques
The Township balances visual impact with the need for co-location on a case-by-case basis.
3. Public consultation
- Required unless the installation is excluded under ISED criteria.
- Must be completed within 120 days of application acceptance.
- A summary report of public feedback must be submitted to the Township.
4. Council review
- After consultation, Township staff prepare a report for Council.
- Council may issue a resolution of objection or non-objection.
- A formal letter is sent to ISED and the applicant within 10 days of Council’s decision.
