Beginning’s End Marks Final Exhibit at Langley Centennial Museum

Thursday evening, June 16, marked the opening reception of Langley Centennial Museum’s closing exhibit, Beginning’s End: An Artistic and Celebratory Send-Off, which runs until September 30. This final exhibit celebrates the local groups and artists who have exhibited here over the years and the role of the Langley Centennial Museum in our community. Over 130 people were in attendance.
Long-exhibiting members of community arts groups including the Langley Arts Council, Fort Langley Artists Group, Fraser Valley Potters Guild, Langley Weavers’ and Spinners’ Guild, Fraser Valley Watermedia Society, and local Indigenous and Metis artists coordinated in collaboration with stalew Arts & Cultural Society, have joined together in this artful send-off to the Langley Centennial Museum.
Although the 64-year-old museum opened in 1958, the National Exhibition Centre addition was built in 1974. This gallery space enabled the Museum to welcome travelling exhibits from around the globe, and to highlight the arts and culture of our local community.
“For almost five decades, the gallery has been a space for local artists and the community to share and be inspired,” said Arts & Heritage Curator Kobi Christian. “While exhibitions have travelled from other provinces or countries, we’ve also been able to share stories of Langley, and what makes this place unique. In this show, the amazing amount of talent in this community is highlighted, as well as the decades of important relationships we’d like to carry forward with us into our new facility.”
Following this exhibit, the Langley Centennial Museum will close so staff can prepare to move across the street to Salishan Place by the River. “It’s exciting but bittersweet, and I think the exhibition is a bit of a reflection of that,” noted Christian.
Artists from the various exhibiting groups will be demonstrating their techniques at the museum over the summer. To find out more, visit museum.tol.ca or contact 604-532-3536.
