Education and Outreach
Education and outreach are key components of the Township of Langley’s Climate Action Strategy. Understanding and knowing the facts about sustainability and climate change empowers people from all backgrounds and helps eliminate the uncertainty some may feel about the environment and climate change.
The below programs aim to both educate and empower Township residents to improve the environment and take action on climate change.
Climate Ambassadors
The Climate Ambassadors program builds off the success of the Water Wise outreach program, which has been operating in the Township since 2002 and has reached thousands of Township residents. In partnership with Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS), the new Climate Ambassadors program will branch out from the previous water conservation messaging and expand its scope to be more inclusive of other major climate issues, including a focus on the Big Moves identified in our Climate Action Strategy.
Through conversations with residents, the Climate Ambassadors will share information about the Climate Action Strategy and point to additional resources. During the visit, residents will also have the opportunity to share feedback and provide valuable information to the Township by taking a brief survey. Additionally, both teams of Climate Ambassadors will attend community events and host educational workshops.
This year, four Climate Ambassadors will be out in residential communities in teams of two focusing on the following topics areas and neighbourhoods.
Climate Ambassador Team | Outreach neighbourhood | Outreach topics |
---|---|---|
Water and Stormwater | Murrayville and Fort Langley | Water conservation at home, managing stormwater on private property, new Metro Vancouver watering restrictions |
Sustainable Transportation | Willoughby, Willowbrook, and Walnut Grove | Benefits of active travel or taking transit, transitioning to electric vehicles, electric vehicle and electric bicycle purchasing incentives, reducing overall vehicles trips |
The Climate Ambassadors program is provided with funding support from the federal Canada Summer Jobs program and the Township of Langley.
Sustainability grants
To support and encourage residents and local registered non-profits and registered charities to undertake climate and sustainability-related projects, the Township has created the Sustainability Grant Pilot Program. Learn more about the Sustainability Grant Pilot Program.
