Climate Ambassadors Bring Sustainability to Your Doorstep

An opportunity to learn more about making environmentally-friendly choices will be knocking on Township residents’ doors, as Climate Ambassadors embark on a summer-long journey across the municipality.
The door-to-door visits are part of the new Climate Ambassador program launching in July by the Township of Langley and Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS). The program builds off the success of the previous WaterWise outreach program, which had operated in the Township since 2002 and reached thousands of residents over the years. While the Climate Ambassador program will utilize the same public education tactics, its scope will now encompass other major climate issues identified in the Township’s Climate Action Strategy.
“For nearly a decade, pairs of students would visit neighbourhoods to talk about the importance of conserving our water resources,” says Meghan Woods, Environmental Sustainability Coordinator with the Township of Langley. “We’ve seen the success of this grassroots approach delivered through LEPS and are excited to introduce an enhanced version to residents this summer.”
Four Climate Ambassadors will aim to visit as many households as possible to talk to residents about how they can lessen their impact on the environment and act on climate change. In Murrayville and Fort Langley, the Ambassadors will share information regarding water conservation, and in Willoughby, Willowbrook, and Walnut Grove, the focus will be talking about the benefits of making active and sustainable transportation choices. During the visit, residents will also have the opportunity to share feedback and provide valuable information to the Township by taking a brief survey.
“The Climate Ambassadors team are local university students with a passion for climate action and sustainability,” explains Nichole Marples, LEPS’ Executive Director. “We are excited to work with the Township of Langley to implement this important project in support of their Climate Action Strategy.”
Residents interested in connecting with the Climate Ambassadors, but who may not receive a visit, are encouraged to keep an eye out for the students at community events and attend educational workshops hosted by LEPS this summer.
