To help reduce energy emissions, Township of Langley Council unanimously approved the elevation of BC Energy Step Code requirements along with the addition of Zero Carbon Step Code requirements for Part 9 residential buildings, at the Regular Council Meeting on December 4 2023.
“Implementing Step Code 4 for Part 9 Residential Buildings along with Zero Carbon Step Code will help the Township of Langley reduce our community’s long-term GHG emissions. Buildings are one of the largest segments of our economy that produce GHGs. Implementation of these steps even a few years earlier will pay dividends for many years in cost savings and reduced emissions.” - Mayor Eric Woodward
“The Township continues to lead the way as the first jurisdiction south of the Fraser to adopt both Step 4 and initiate Zero Carbon Step Code requirements for Part 9 Residential Buildings under the BC Energy Step Code. We will continue being leaders while providing certainty and reasonable timeframes for the construction industry." - Councillor Misty vanPopta
The BC Energy Step Code prioritizes reducing energy demand in homes by improving heating, cooling, ventilation efficiencies and air tightness and the Zero Carbon Step Code supports making significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). Compliance with the last step of the Step Code (step 5) for Part 9 residential buildings results in a home that consumes approximately 80% less energy than a Step 1 home.
