Drowning Prevention Week
National Drowning Prevention Week is marked in the third week of July and focuses community attention on drowning prevention. The 2025 theme is, “Safer Together.” Never swim alone – keep an eye on one another and make safety a shared priority.
On Thursday, July 24 from 1 to 3pm (during the regular public swim), join us at Walnut Grove Community Centre or W.C. Blair Recreation Centre to learn water safety skills, try the Swim to Survive® challenge, and watch lifesaving and first aid demonstrations.
This event is geared for children ages 5 to 12 years old, but all ages are welcome. Regular admission fees and rules apply. Children under 7 must always be supervised by a responsible person.
The Swim to Survive® challenge can be done with or without a Personal Floatation Device (PFD). Everyone who successfully completes the challenge will receive a certification of completion
What is Swim to Survive®?
Swim to Survive, a program by the Township of Langley’s swimming lesson provider, the Lifesaving Society, teaches the minimum skills needed to survive an unexpected fall into deep water. The Swim to Survive® standard includes three important skills:
- Roll into deep water
- Tread water for 1 minute
- Swim 50 metres
