Fight the Bite

The Township of Langley participates in the Metro Vancouver Regional Nuisance Mosquito Control Program. Spring monitoring of mosquito breeding sites by the contactor, Morrow BioScience, has begun. Floodwater mosquitoes are responsible for the greatest nuisance in Langley. Treatment of larvae will begin as needed as Fraser River levels and temperatures rise this spring.
While larvicide must be applied by a licensed professional, there are things we can all do at home now to reduce local mosquito levels this summer.
- In your yard, look for any standing water on your property that may inadvertently be the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.
- Fix leaky outdoor taps.
- Unplug drainages.
- Overturn used containers such as tires, buckets, toys, bird baths, flowerpots, etc. that have collected stagnant water.
- Inflatable wading pools should be emptied and overturned when they are not in use.
- Add a pump to keep water in ponds circulating.
How to protect yourself from mosquito bites
Take the following measures to reduce the risk of being bitten.
-
Wear long, light-coloured and loose-fitting clothing when you go outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are active.
-
Use mosquito repellent.
-
Ensure you have proper screens on windows and doors.
-
Be aware of your surroundings and areas where mosquitoes are likely to be present, such as wooded areas or areas with standing water.
