Freshet 2021 Update 12:30pm July 6

Back to Search

The River Forecast Centre has ended the High Streamflow Advisory for the Fraser River.  With easing temperatures and decreased snowmelt rates, rivers have reached their peak levels. Continued recession of river flow is expected through the week.

Update June 27.  The River Forecast Centre is reporting that the Fraser River is currently experiencing increased flows, with the Mission Gauge reaching 5.0m this morning.  As a result of extreme temperatures, the remaining snowpack is rapidly melting, with the river expected to rise throughout the week.

Update June 11.  Marina Park, including the boat launch, have reopened.

The River Forecast Centre is reporting that the Fraser River is currently experiencing reduced seasonal flows, with the Mission Gauge at 4.67m, and decreased flows anticipated in the coming days. No current closures are in effect as a result of Freshet 2021.

Update June 19. The Fort to Fort Trail, from Allard Crescent to the Salmon River Dyke station is now open.

Update June 9.The water levels on the Fraser River are receding, and expected to continue to decline this week.  As a result, the Trans Canada Trail from Allard Crescent south to the 10200 block of 208 Street has reopened.

Marina Park, the boat launch, and the Fort to Fort Trail between the Salmon River Dyke Station and Allard Crescent remain closed.

Update June 8. The Trans Canada Trail is closed until further notice, from Allard Crescent south to the 10200 block of 208 Street due to flooding.

Update June 7. Marina Park, and the Fort to Fort Trail between the Salmon River Dyke Station and Allard Crescent are both closed until further notice as a result of high water/flooding.

Update June 6. The Mission Gauge on the Fraser River is expected to reach 5.5m by Monday, June 7.  As a result, the Marina Park Boat Launch and the Langley Rowing/Paddling Centre Dock will close at dusk on Sunday, June 6, and remain closed until further notice

Residents are reminded to stay clear of fast-flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks during the high-streamflow period.

Update June 5:  The Mission Gauge on the Fraser River is currently reading 5.1m and rising.

The Township has a comprehensive Flood Response Plan that has been updated based on prior years' experiences, and includes regular dyke inspections and monitoring of the water levels provided by federal and provincial agencies.

The Township of Langley's Flood Response Plan considers the readings at the Mission Gauge to determine the threat of flooding and action that should be taken by those potentially impacted.

Residents in the floodplain are reminded to have a plan in place which includes arranging to stay with family or friends, having emergency kits packed with clothes, medication and other necessities, ensuring a meeting place has been established if families are not together if an evacuation is ordered, and making provision for pets and livestock.

  1. Know the risks:  The Fraser River spring freshet results from snow melt in the Fraser River watershed.  The river generally starts rising near the end of May and continues until mid-July.  The Township strongly encourages property owners in the floodplain to consider the consequences of a flood happening on their own property, and to address any issues ahead of time.
  2. Confirm your plan:  In the event of an emergency, residents may be advised by the Township to evacuate their homes.  Have a plan on where to go, what to take, and how to keep in touch with loved ones while you are away.
  3. Create an emergency kit:  Prepare to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.  By gathering a few basic supplies ahead of time, you will not be as severely affected if your tap water or electricity is cut off.  Visit getprepared.gc.ca for a complete list of what to include in your emergency kit.

Updates will be posted here, and @Langley Township on Twitter and Facebook.
