Household Hazardous Waste Plus Collection Event

Township of Langley residents are invited to safely dispose of a variety of household hazardous waste items on Saturday, October 28 and Sunday, October 29, 2023 at George Preston Recreation Centre from 9am to 3pm each day. The Household Hazardous Waste Plus Collection event provides an opportunity to get rid of leftovers that clutter our cupboards, garages, and sheds. A variety of things are accepted at the event, including pesticides, motor oil, electronics, batteries, solvents, lightbulbs, and more.
“For more than twenty years, Township residents have used these collection events as an opportunity to clear out items taking up space around their homes. Some of these household products contain materials that become dangerous if they are disposed of improperly in the trash, down the toilet, in the sink, or buried in yards,” said Christopher Combe, Environmental Sustainability Coordinator for the Township of Langley. “The Household Hazardous Waste Plus Collection Event is a chance to recycle or dispose of these unwanted items safely in one place.”
This year’s free event is back at George Preston Recreation Centre, located at 20699 - 42 Avenue. Access to the drop-off area is via southbound 208 Street only. Visitors are encouraged to bring donations of non-perishable food items for the Aldergrove Food Bank.
During the event, staff will unload waste from vehicles, but only items retrievable from truck beds or vehicle trunks/hatches will be accepted. Items passed through doors or windows will not be accepted, and all liquid items must be in secure containers and cannot be leaking. Anyone planning to attend is encouraged to review the Preferred Packing Order diagram at tol.ca/hhw before loading their vehicles. Walk-ins will not be permitted.
The Household Hazardous Waste Plus Collection Event attracts hundreds of vehicles each year, and lineups are possible. “Residents can skip the line at this event by choosing to bring many items to depots and participating retailers year-round,” said Combe. Please check with your preferred depot ahead to make sure your items will be accepted. Some of the most common items dropped-off at the event, such as motor oil, thermostats and smoke alarms, and small appliances are easily recycled elsewhere, year-round and free-of-charge, thanks to provincial recycling programs. The Household Hazardous Waste Event is for Township of Langley residents only. Proof of Township residency (driver's licence or utility bill) is required.
