New Fire Hall 5 Brings Enhanced Service Levels

The Township of Langley and the Township of Langley Fire Department are improving service and response times in our community with the opening of the new Fire Hall 5 in Brookswood-Fernridge.

The new hall located at 19950 27 Avenue replaces the previous Fire Hall 5 at 20355 32 Avenue. The previous hall operated under a paid call response model. The new facility is the first purpose built composite fire hall in the Township of Langley and will be staffed by both career and paid call firefighters. It’s the first new fire hall constructed in the municipality in 20 years.

Brookswood, like other urban areas of Langley, will now, finally, have full-time service. For residents, farms, and businesses, this means lower response times, lower home insurance rates, and vastly improved public safety. For fires, of course, but also a lot more too, from medical calls, to auto extrication, to lift assists,” said Township of Langley Mayor, Eric Woodward.

The hall also incorporates features that support firefighter health, including dedicated decontamination areas that help reduce exposure to harmful contaminants. We are proud to have Fire Hall 5 fully operational and serving the residents of the Township of Langley," said Township Fire Chief Jason de Roy.

The new Fire Hall 5 has been strategically located within the Brookswood-Fernridge service area to optimize response times and improve coverage across the Township. Its proximity to major roadways reduces travel distances and enhances access to high-demand areas. An analysis conducted in advance of opening shows a significant reduction in the expected average response time for the following response zones with the addition of a career staffed engine with four personnel at the new Fire Hall 5:

Beyond improved response times and operational effectiveness, the relocation and enhanced staffing model are also expected to positively impact residential insurance costs for many Township residents.

The design of the approximately 18,000 square foot facility further enhances response efficiency. It includes four drive-through apparatus bays with quick-release door systems, as well as direct and efficient routes from living quarters for personnel to access the apparatus bays. Advanced alerting systems will reduce turnout times, and the site orientation is set up to minimize vehicle wear, while allowing for rapid and safe egress by firefighters responding to calls. The hose tower has been strategically designed as a multi-purpose/multi-functional space, incorporating many training uses, such as confined space and technical rescue, fireground operations, low and high-rise building operations, and fireground survival.

The new hall meets the latest post-disaster requirements in the BC Building Code. It has been officially certified under the Canada Green Building Council’s Zero Carbon Building Standards, and includes an array of 54 rooftop solar panels which will generate 12% of the hall’s energy needs. Any excess generation will go back into the grid.

Research has shown that occupational cancer is now the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths among Canadian firefighters. Fire Hall 5 incorporates modern design features, including dedicated decontamination areas and operational layouts that reduce exposure to harmful contaminants, helping us protect both our community and the health of our firefighters for years to come.

The landscape at Fire Hall 5 was designed using FireSmart BC landscaping principles. The landscape is designed, installed, and maintained with the goal of reducing the ignition and spread of fire from landscape materials to structures.

The new Fire Hall 5 is now fully operational and crews from the hall are responding to calls in our community. The previous Fire Hall 5, constructed in 1992, will continue to serve as a space for future training opportunities in the Township.
