Redefining Readiness: Fire Department Tours
Recently, we hosted several crews from the Township of Langley Fire Department for a series of comprehensive airfield tours. While the crews are familiar with the area, the dynamic nature of an airport means that a "refresher" is never just a formality—it’s a necessity.
The primary goal of these sessions was to re-acquaint responders with the unique layout of YNJ to ensure that, in the event of an emergency, every second is used effectively.
Key Focus Areas
During the walk-throughs and drive-throughs, we focused on several critical logistics:
- Airport Jurisdictions & Roles: To ensure a seamless and coordinated emergency response, all responders must understand the specific roles and authorities of the various agencies managing the airport.
- Critical Geography & Terminology: Responders must clearly distinguish between different airport surfaces (e.g., movement vs. non-movement areas) to mitigate safety risks and prevent runway incursions.
- Response Protocols & Communication: Effective coordination for safe airfield entry is highly dynamic, depending heavily on the time of day, air traffic volume, and current staffing levels.
- Safety Hazards & Incident Management: Several technical hazards were identified during the walkthrough, emphasizing that each airfield presents a unique environment requiring tailored management strategies.
In an airfield environment, "minutes" are too long. We measure success in seconds. These tours ensure that the Fire Department doesn't just have a map—they have muscle memory.
We want to extend a huge thank you to the Township of Langley Fire Department for their engagement and professional insight. This collaboration allows our operations team and first responders to speak the same language. By bridging the gap between municipal fire tactics and aviation-specific needs, we create a safer environment for our pilots, staff, and the community.
