Road Safety Operation Targets Unsafe Commercial Vehicles
The Township of Langley’s commitment to enhancing road safety was on display during a large-scale commercial vehicle enforcement operation in the Gloucester area. The enforcement initiative, conducted in partnership with multiple police and regulatory agencies, resulted in numerous violations, charges, and the removal of unsafe vehicles from the roads.
On November 13, 2024, enforcement officers set up in the 26800 block of 56 Avenue. They conducted 102 inspections on commercial vehicles, including trucks, vans, and trailers. This operation was part of the Township's ongoing Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Program. It focused on identifying commercial vehicles that exhibited signs of potential safety issues, such as visible maintenance deficiencies or other indicators of non-compliance with safety regulations.
The operation resulted in 141 violations detected under the Motor Vehicle Act (MVA), Motor Vehicle Act Regulations (MVAR), and Township of Langley Bylaws. 30 vehicles were taken out of service due to serious safety violations. 3 vehicles were towed from the roadway for critical issues. 12 bylaw tickets were issued, including one for an overweight vehicle. 38 violations tickets were issued under the MVA and MVAR.
During the inspections, officers noted a variety of serious infractions. They observed insecure loads, failure to conduct pre-trip inspections, burnt-out or broken headlights, improper brake adjustments, missing license plates, and vehicles operating without insurance. These violations pose significant risks to public safety and highlight the ongoing need for rigorous enforcement to ensure all commercial vehicles on the road are operating safely and within legal parameters.
"The safety of our roads is a top priority," said Simon Jottey Bylaw Enforcement Officer CVSU with the Township of Langley. “By collaborating with our law enforcement partners, we are able to identify and remove unsafe vehicles from our roads to reduce the risk of accidents and improve overall traffic safety."
This joint enforcement operation was carried out in collaboration with BC Highway Patrol (IRSU), Vancouver Police, Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement (CVSE), Delta Police, New Westminster Police, Coquitlam RCMP, Surrey Bylaws, Coquitlam Bylaws, and Langley RCMP Traffic.
The Township of Langley’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Program is focused on ensuring that all commercial vehicles operating within its jurisdiction meet strict safety and compliance standards. This proactive approach is part of the Township’s broader strategy to protect road users and enhance community safety.
