Bring your family and friends and get active at the 62nd annual Langley Walk on Sunday, May 5 at Walnut Grove Community Park. This free, family event welcomes participants of all ages and abilities who can choose to walk, run, bike, or roll the 5 km route.
“The Langley Walk is a long-standing tradition that brings people together every year,” said Township of Langley Mayor Eric Woodward. “It is wonderful to see residents take this opportunity to get together with family and friends, get active, and explore some of the neighbourhoods that make up our community.”
The event begins at 12:30pm with a pre-walk warm-up followed by participants starting the 5 km walk at 1pm. The route starts and ends at Walnut Grove Community Park and can accommodate bicycles, strollers, and wheelchairs. Dogs on leashes are also welcome.
To participate, register online for free at tol.ca/langleywalk. You can also register in-person on the day of the event, prior to the walk starting at 1pm.
“I love seeing how enthusiastic people are about participating in the Langley Walk,” said Langley City Mayor Nathan Pachal. “There are walkers who have been doing this event for years and it is great to see them proudly wearing shirts or jackets full of the crests that they have collected over time.”
Everyone who walks will receive a commemorative crest at the finish line. Plaques will be awarded to the oldest walker, as well as to the most walkers from a family, an organization, and an elementary, middle, or high school.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles or cups. A water station will be located at the half- way mark on the route, at Gordon Greenwood Elementary School.
The Langley Walk was first held in 1963 and was established by Pete Swensson, the Township of Langley’s first recreation director, who wanted to encourage residents to be more physically active. The original Langley Walk was 28 km long. It extended from Aldergrove Park, along River Road, to Fort Langley, then on to City Park, and thousands of people participated. The walk alternates on a four-year cycle between the City of Langley and Township of Langley, with the Township hosting three years at a time. Next year’s walk will also be held in the Township.
