Tips for Draining Swimming Pools and Hot Tubs

If you have a pool or hot tub, you may be preparing to drain it and clean the systems after a busy summer. In most cases, the Township’s stormwater system drains directly into our local creeks and rivers. Since swimming pools & hot tubs may contain chemicals (such as chlorine), here are some Best Management Practices (BMPs) for draining swimming pools and/or hot tubs to ensure the health of our waterways:
-
De-chlorinate the water
- Let the pool stand for up to 10 days, depending on the size of the pool and sun exposure.
- Or
- Use de-chlorination tablets which can be found at local pool supply stores.
-
Test the water using chlorine test strips (also found at local pool supply stores)
- If chlorine still exists, repeat step 1.
-
Drain pool slowly to lawn
- This is to be done over a long period of time, several hours to days, depending on the size of the pool and lawn.
- If the lawn becomes saturated too quickly, and water run off impacts neighbours, the road, and/or adjacent trail or park systems, stop and wait for water to seep into the lawn.
- Do not discharge water directly to the storm drain system* or to any hard surfaces as this could cause damage to/flooding of public infrastructure, watercourses, or neighbouring properties.
*If you witness pool or hot tub water being discharged directly to Township infrastructure, including roadside catch basins or park trails please inform the Township Bylaws department directly.
