Township Honours Outstanding Volunteers at Annual Awards
The Township of Langley is proud to recognize the exceptional contributions of local volunteers who make a meaningful difference in the community. Each year, residents are invited to nominate individuals whose dedication, leadership, and generosity help strengthen Langley and enhance quality of life for others.
The Township’s Volunteer Appreciation and Awards Evening was held on Thursday, April 9 at the Langley Events Centre, where volunteers were celebrated and three major awards were presented: the Eric Flowerdew Volunteer Award, the John and Muriel Arnason Award, and the Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award.
“A heartfelt congratulations to all those honoured with this year's Volunteer Awards," said Mayor Eric Woodward. "And to every single volunteer in our community, thank you. Your willingness to give your time and energy is deeply appreciated. You are the ones who truly enrich the lives of our residents and make the Township of Langley the special place it is to live, work, and play.”
Eric Flowerdew Volunteer Award
Named after a former Parks and Recreation commissioner, school trustee, and municipal councillor, the Eric Flowerdew Volunteer Award recognizes an individual who promotes active living and enhances Langley’s community spirit.
The 2026 Eric Flowerdew Volunteer Award was presented to Melba King.
Melba has volunteered in Langley for more than 10 years, supporting community health and well-being. She works with individuals recovering from stroke, those in hospice care, and others to build strength, connection, and cognitive wellness. In addition to her hands-on support, Melba mentors new volunteers, helping expand the reach and impact of these programs.
John and Muriel Arnason Award
Named after former Township Councillor and Freewoman Muriel Arnason and her husband John, this award recognizes two individuals who volunteer together to make the Township a better place.
The 2026 John and Muriel Arnason Award was presented to Beatrice Lindsay-Hawkins and Martyn Boulter.
For 16 years, Beatrice and Martyn have been dedicated volunteers with Langley BMX and BMX Canada. They play a key role in maintaining tracks, organizing provincial and national races, and supporting the growth of the sport. Their commitment and leadership continue to inspire riders and strengthen the local BMX community.
Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award
Named after the Township’s first Recreation Director, the Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award is presented to a Grade 11 or 12 student who demonstrates excellence in athletics, academics, leadership, and community service.
The 2026 Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award was presented to Addison Miller.
Addison is a dedicated multi-sport athlete and team captain competing in Division 1 soccer, speed and synchronized swimming, and dance. She founded the swim team at Langley Fine Arts School, where she recruits, coaches, and mentors teammates while competing at the provincial level. Addison also leads her school’s mentorship program, supporting younger students in reading, math, and mental wellness. Beyond school, she has fundraised for her school’s sister school in Kenya and volunteers with the Vancouver Rabbit Rescue and Advocacy Society, caring for animals and preparing them for foster homes.
Recipients of the Flowerdew and Arnason awards each receive $1,000 to donate to a recognized charity or society of their choice that supports Township residents. The Swensson award recipient receives a $1,500 scholarship.
