Aldergrove Community Centre Lap Pool Resurfacing

Posted on Wednesday, March 26, 2025

ACC lap pool

Overview

Each year after spring break, the Township of Langley closes the Aldergrove Community Centre (ACC) lap pool, the small leisure pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room for approximately 3 weeks for annual maintenance. This year, the lap pool requires resurfacing due to age deterioration in multiple locations, and if not completed now would create safety concerns for users, require a much longer closure period, and lead to higher resurfacing costs. The approved longer-term solution of installing tiles for the pool surface will give it a life expectancy of 15 years.

The resurfacing will require the lap pool’s annual three-week maintenance closure, beginning March 31, to be extended for 3 additional weeks during demolition (for user safety reasons due to proximity to the lap pool, this extension includes the lap pool, the small leisure pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room). The lap pool will be closed for a longer period during resurfacing, due to the complex nature of that process.

After the initial demolition, the small leisure pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room are planned to re-open around May 12, 2025. The resurfacing is anticipated to take approximately 3.5 - 4 more months, re-opening by late August. Due to weather/temperature constraints, seasonal water tables and hydrostatic pressure, the work needs to be completed during the spring/summer months.

All other ACC amenities are planned to be open during all or much of this project, subject to which amenity and based on its regular annual operating schedule, including the arena, fitness centre, small leisure pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, waterpark, and wave pool. See status and timing section below.

The Township has been working to temporarily distribute swimming lessons, public swim sessions, and user group scheduling to other pools in the Township as needed. If your program or activity is affected by these changes, we will contact you directly. If you do not hear from us, your program will continue as scheduled. We continue to work on other options that will minimize disruption for users and allow for broad continuation of those programs and services during the lap pool closure period.

The work was considered for scheduling in 2026 however, deferring it creates much higher risk for further deterioration of the surface and potentially the underlying structure, and would create safety concerns for users, require a much longer closure period, and lead to higher resurfacing costs.

We appreciate everyone’s understanding and patience while the lap pool is resurfaced.

Key points

  • The primary positive outcome for all users from this project is that the pool will be better than ever for double the previous life span – up to 15 years or until 2040.
  • All other ACC amenities are planned to be open during all or much of the resurfacing project.
  • The Township has been working to distribute swimming lessons, public swim sessions, and user group scheduling to other pools in the Township.
  • Overall, the short-term investment in closure time will provide significant long-term gains for all users.

Status of other ACC amenities

Status of all other ACC amenities during the lap pool resurfacing closure period:

  • the arena remains open throughout the lap pool closure period
  • the fitness centre remains open throughout the lap pool closure period (aside from its annual 3-day maintenance closure, this year from March 31 to April 2, 2025)
  • temporarily, for user safety reasons due to proximity to the lap pool, the small leisure pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room will be closed during demolition, but will re-open once demolition is complete
  • May 12, the small leisure pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room are planned to re-open
  • May 16, the waterpark and wave pool are planned to open as they normally do each spring

Program scheduling

The Township has been working to temporarily distribute swimming lessons, public swim sessions, and user group scheduling to other pools in the Township as needed. If your program or activity is affected by these changes, we will contact you directly. If you do not hear from us, your program will continue as scheduled.

We continue to work on other options that will minimize disruption for users and allow for broad continuation of those programs and services during the lap pool closure period.

We understand the lap pool closure will be inconvenient for some community members and user groups, but periodic resurfacing is a standard procedure for outdoor pools, and we appreciate your understanding and patience while the resurfacing is being completed.

Consider enjoying one of the many other indoor and outdoor programs and activities the Township offers including arts, crafts, fitness, exercise, sports, games, parks, hiking, biking, events, and much more.

Timing

March 31: lap pool closes for demolition. For user safety, due to proximity to the lap pool, this temporarily includes the small leisure pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room, but they will re-open once demolition is complete.

May 12: the small leisure pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room are planned to re-open.

May 16: the waterpark and wave pool are planned to open as they normally do each spring. Visit The Outdoor Experience for more information.

Late August: the lap pool planned to re-open for public and user group needs.

FAQs and answers

Why is the lap pool being closed?

The lap pool requires resurfacing due to age deterioration in multiple locations, and if not completed now would create safety concerns for users, require a much longer closure period, and lead to higher resurfacing costs.

How long is the lap pool closed for?

This project will require the lap pool’s regular annual three-week maintenance closure (which also includes the lap pool, the small leisure pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room each year) to be extended for 3 additional weeks during demolition. After the initial demolition, the small leisure pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room are planned to re-open around May 12. The lap pool will remain closed for resurfacing, which is anticipated to take approximately 3.5 - 4 more months, re-opening by late August.

What about the other amenities at ACC?

All other ACC amenities are planned to be open during all or much of this project, subject to which amenity and based on its regular annual operating schedule, including the arena and fitness centre, small leisure pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, waterpark, and wave pool. See status and timing sections above.

Is my program affected?

The Township has been working to temporarily distribute swimming lessons, public swim sessions, and user group scheduling to other pools in the Township as needed. If your program or activity is affected by these changes, we will contact you directly. If you do not hear from us, your program will continue as scheduled. We continue to work on other options that will minimize disruption for users and allow for broad continuation of those programs and services during the lap pool closure period.

When was the 2025 closure decided?

Each year, the pool closes for three weeks of annual maintenance after spring break. This year, after taking time to thoroughly consider and review the pool surface age deterioration, the complex pool process, project schedule, and contract awarding, and after conducting a review of user needs and schedules, the final closure decision was reached very recently.

Can this work be deferred until 2026?

The work was considered for scheduling in 2026 however, deferring it creates much higher risk for further deterioration of the surface and potentially the underlying structure, and would create safety concerns for users, require a much longer closure period, and lead to higher resurfacing costs.

Where is the money for this coming from?

The funding was approved in the recently approved 2025 budget but due to many factors, a final decision on when to do the project was not completed until very recently.

Will the lap pool need to be resurfaced again in 7 years?

No. The approved longer-term solution of installing tiles for the pool surface will give it a life expectancy of 15 years.
