Snow updates and reminders

The recent snowfall accumulations have not been seen since the winter of 2008/09. Township crews from multiple departments and all Winter Fleet vehicles have been working around the clock dealing with priority roads, clearing bus stops, intersections, and sidewalks today and will be at it again tomorrow.
Prevent localized flooding
As the weather changes and warmer temperatures arrive, follow the advice here to prepare your home and property for rain and snowmelt.
High Streamflow Advisory
The River Forecast Centre is maintaining a high streamflow advisory for the south coast. A significant rainfall pattern is moving across the southern coast of BC today and into early next week. River levels have started to experience accelerated rising in most areas. Snow melt at lower elevations is also anticipated to cause pooling and flooding in some areas.
The public is advised to stay clear of fast-flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks during the high-streamflow period.
Snow clearing
Thank you for your patience as Township of Langley crews work around the clock to clear and maintain more than 500 kilometres of roadway. The Township’s Snow and Ice Control policy categorizes roadways as First, Second, or Third Priority Routes.
Similarly, Township crews are working to clear and maintain over 65 kilometres of hard-surface trails, sidewalks and pathways on park property and 37 park parking lots when conditions warrant. The Township’s Snow and Ice Control – Parks and Trails policy categorizes these locations as First, Second, or Third Priority Routes.

Curbside collection in winter conditions
Due to the recent snowfall and to provide greater certainty on collection services, Green Cart collection has been suspended for the remainder of this week (December 19-23).
Garbage and recycling will proceed, however, crews will be exercising extreme caution in areas with hills or limited turn around space. Homes where garbage is missed should continue to leave it out until it has been collected.
Missed recycling should be left out for the remainder of the week before being pulled in and set out again next week. Read this information on curbside collection in winter conditions.
Building inspections
Due to inclement weather, inspections may be limited based on accessibility. For more information on building inspections visit our webpage.
Sidewalk snow removal reminder
When it snows, Township of Langley residents and businesses are reminded that they are responsible for keeping their sidewalks clear, for everyone’s safety.
Under the Township’s Highway and Traffic Bylaw, snow in residential areas must be removed from sidewalks and walkways within 24 hours of the first accumulation of snow.
In commercial and industrial areas, snow must be removed from sidewalks and walkways by 10:00 am.
The public is also reminded that cleared snow cannot be pushed on roadways, as it may hinder vehicles. Cleared snow must remain on the property.
“This bylaw helps keep our community safe. It protects people, both physically and legally,” said Township Bylaw Enforcement Manager Ruby Senghera. “Clearing snow and ice from walkways will help prevent injuries from falls, and protect you from incurring fines of up to $100 per day.”
For more information, contact the Township Bylaw Department at 604-532-7551 or bylaw@tol.ca.
